zestasià_and_friends: presents Dia Shaik

I am very excited about this month's guest.

She is a good friend of mine and she has always been there to help me. She is really fun to talk to and of course, my fangirl buddy ヾ(^▽^*)))

Dia matriculated in a small down in Azaadville (and no I am not from Azzadville but we became friends through my Instagram. Not all internet friends are bad(*゜ー゜*) ). She did Islamic Studies for 2 years and although it was intense, she loved every bit of it.

She is a Doula in training. And for those of you who don't know what a Doula is, it is a person that provides emotional support for women in labour. Really cool, am I right?

She is also a counsellor in training and like... I'm shook at how accomplished she is becoming Alhamdulillah!

And lastly, in the words of the woman herself, because I can't rephrase this and it needs to be left in the way she said it:

"Lover of stories and art, poetry and learning (anything and EVERYTHING). Can mostly be found... Procrastinating or talking... Usually as a way of procrastinating".

And now I leave you with her fantastic piece on humanity.

**********

“Hey” I whisper. “I’ve got a secret to tell.” “Ooh pick me!” a score of people come running. “Tell me as well!”

So many voices, such big eyes hungry hands reaching out, sickly-sweet smiles I step back, retreat. In an attempt to flee I see every pair of eyes staring at me

“What?! What is it?” I cry in alarm “Do I have stuff in my teeth? Am I missing an arm?”

Smiles turn to sorrow, sensing my fear “We’re not here to frighten you… we’re just lending an ear We just want to listen to what you have to say We don’t have much to offer, but please, let us stay. Let us love you without judgement. Oh please let us braid your hair! Let us offer support and show that we care.”

Still wary I hesitated, trembling bones, red in the face. They looked at each other and nodded, enveloping me in an embrace.

How quickly my ice thawed, how easy to smile how much I have to tell you, “You’ll be here a while…” “WELCOME,” they chimed. “To the society of Humanity.”

Human beings need other human beings. We are all alone and all together on this vast earth, we call home. And though landscapes and world views may change, the fact that I need YOU just as much as you need ME never does.

Praise be to the Almighty, I’ve had immense learning opportunities. I’ve found, however, that despite the vastness of lessons or the uniqueness of subject and teacher, one thing remains common throughout; i.e without the love and support of people, nothing is really possible.

Cultivating skills like empathy and understanding, treating people as PEOPLE with hopes, dreams and feelings and being a means of love and kindness (despite how ultra-cheesy that sounds) is EXACTLY what we need in the world right now. Treat people as they would like to be treated, NOT how you feel they should be treated, yes there’s a difference. Be nice for your own peace of mind. The sooner we start making an effort to be good to each other, the faster the world will change for the better.

Book recommendations that will make you feel loved (I hope):

  • Smile by Raina Telgemeier: Graphic novel about growing up and learning to love yourself. (Anything by Raina is a win for me tbh)

  • Love and Leftovers by Sarah Tregay: Poetry- format novel on… just learning how to live life honestly. It will both break and mend your heart.

  • Little Women by Louisa May Alcott: Everyone should have some sort of experience with this book. It’s such a joy. It’s hella long, being a classic obviously. I recommend listening to it as an audiobook from Librivox. It’s free and the voice-over work is excellent.

Sending love and prayers for all of you out there. May any trials you may be facing be eased and may any joy you’re feeling only continue to multiply.

To conclude, I give you a piece of my heart:

Olivia Gatwood - Ode to the Women on Long Island
