Review: Midnights Twins by Holly Race

Synopsis:

Londoner Ferk King is about to uncover Annwn: the dream mirror of our world. But Annwn is as full of dangers as it is wonders - it is a place where dreams and nightmares come to life.

Annwn is protected by an ancient order, and when Fern's hated twin Ollie is chosen to join their ranks, Fern will have to do whatever she can to prove she is one of them too.

With nightmares becoming harder to defeat and something dark threatening both Annwn and our world, Fern realises the real dangers we face in our sleep are far more terrifying than any nightmare. Because if you can influence someone's dreams, you can control their thoughts...

Rating: 4.6/5

Hi there! Hope you all have had a fantastic week and that you're looking after yourself because October is Mental Health Awareness month and your mental health should be your priority right now (✿◡‿◡). I have been reading a LOT lately, either because I have completely lost my motivation to study or I needed a break from all that stuff (~ ̄▽ ̄)~Either way, I have been reading and recently, like two days ago, I finished reading the YA fantasy Midnights Twins by Holly Race.

Like all YA fantasies, we have our main character/s who have experienced something that led to a whole adventure. Although I will not be saying what exactly occurred in this book, our two main characters, Fern and Ollie King, go through something that leads them to discover a whole dream world. Quite literally, Annwn is yet another fantasy landmark I won't get to see >﹏<

But my bitterness aside, the plotline was really intriguing. It was not anything too complicated and it flowed really well. Holly Race combines medieval mythology and Celtic (faerie) mythology, nothing too over-the-top. It was nice seeing a combination of everything magical and fantastical in one place.

The story is told in third-person perspective and switches from past to present, which was super great because it helped the reader connect the dots and figure things out. I really enjoyed the story because it's pretty difficult to come up with something unique considering the vast ideas surrounding the fantasy genre. Nonetheless, Holly Race really nailed this debut novel.

The characters are all so different, both in personality and looks, but they all get along great together. The character development was ✨impeccable✨. Fern's relationship with her brother is so necessary because it is actually quite a realistic depiction of sibling behaviour. Although, of course, the occurrences in the book regarding Fern and Ollie were way more hectic and sad than what I have witnessed in reality.

Seeing as this is a trilogy, the ending makes me wonder what else the author plans on saying in the next two (hopefully longer) books. Besides the main goal which is taking down the antagonist, I feel like the majority of the questions asked at the beginning of the book were answered throughout the rest of the book. The book ended on a hopeful note, which is again, concerning because no fantasy book ends in a way that doesn't want you to rip your face off.

Overall, I definitely recommend this book to ages 14 and up, and literally anyone who enjoys a good fantasy novel. Thank you to Jonathan Ball Publishers for a copy of this book!

Until next time, remember to sprinkle kindness wherever you go!!!
