Review: Crescent City: House of Earth And Blood by Sarah J. Maas

Synopsis:

BOUND BY BLOOD.

TEMPTED BY DESIRE.

UNLEASHED BY DESTINY.

Bryce Quinlan used to light up Crescent City, partying all night in the clubs where the strict classes of angels, shifters, humans and Fae merge into a sea of beautiful bodies.

And then a demon murdered her closest friends.

Two years later, when the supposed killer is behind bars but the crimes start up again, the city's leaders command Bryce to help investigate. They assign an enslaved fallen angel, Hunt Athalar, to make sure she does. But as Bryce fights to uncover the truth - and resist her attraction to the brooding angel who shadows her every step - she finds herself following a trail that leads deep into her own dark past.

Rating: 4/5

SJM really outdid herself with this novel. Let me start off positive before I proceed to talk about whatever I did not particularly enjoy.

The plot. Oh, my dear goodness, the plot was a masterpiece. I mean, it’s amazing how she gives a reader this whole new world (what’s up Aladdin reference ~( ̄▽ ̄)~*), a world that you just disappear in. The plot is extremely enticing, it takes you on a journey and the curveballs that are thrown at you… an unhealthy amount, even for SJM because I had to constantly shove my face in a pillow and squeal whenever something major happened; especially towards the end of the novel.

And of course, I loved the characters. Reason #1 being Rhysand from her A Court Of Thorns and Roses series and Reason #2 is Hunt Athalar. And Bryce is a whole Q U E E N… words cannot even explain how epic this woman is like… what an icon. The audacity of these people to be so beautiful and morally inclined is ridiculous (well… for some of them (⊙ˍ⊙)). Unfortunately, there is a downside to the characters.

For people like me who have read her other books, you begin to see major similarities in her characters. There is always the badass female protagonist with a tortured past, a gorgeous male with an even more tortured past and your quirky side character who the main character loves but doesn’t show it and of course, the witch and the ridiculously powerful main villain. This right here is the MAJOR rundown for SJM books but they are extremely well-written and way more intricate so if you have not read her books, read them. I only said what I said about the characters because I have read all of her books and this seemed repetitive for me.

Another thing I felt was a bit much was the overload of information and given the size of the book, you know there is a lot that will happen and of course, the overload is expected. But the thing with SJM books is that you have to always pay attention and it’s so good that you do but sometimes, she loses you or you lose your focus and all of a sudden you’re reading something that, according to the characters and the way it’s written, you should already know. It’s easy to just completely lose track of what’s happening so this is not a huge deal, but it is still something that could make someone lose interest in the books.

And lastly, seeing as this is an adult book, not for young adults, the language and some scenes are way more explicit and SJM, even in her YA books, got really explicit but Crescent City was a whole other level of hectic. These things, especially those explicit scenes are not for everyone and if you are like me and it’s a bit too much, skip it. As for the language, a friend mentioned how unnecessary some of the swear words were and when I look back, I totally think she’s right. Just because this was an adult book and swearing was okay, SJM went a teensy bit overboard. Even with the explicitness… It was all too much but that is just my personal view on this aspect. If you want to read it, there’s nothing wrong with it but this was an aside for my fellow faint-hearted ones.

But the story was immensely gripping as well as the characters and I highly recommend it to 18-year-olds and above due to the aforementioned explicitness and vulgarity.

Until next time, don't forget to sprinkle kindness wherever you go 💜
